1. How are you doing, Saúl? How's everything in Barcelona, Spain?
All right. We have had very difficult times for the covid. Now it seems that everything is better, but it is even dangerous because a relaxation of the attention can bring a new outbreak. Spaniards are hot people and it is difficult for us to keep our distance; we love contact from person to person and we love social life.
On the other hand, maintaining a stopped country is financially complicated, so there is the eternal dilemma: whether to give preference to the health of the people or to the economy of a country. In my head I prefer health, but governments really cannot let a country come to a complete stop.
But well ... let's trust that everything will be fine.
2. Would you mind telling us some of the special moments on your creative journey?
Well I don't really have unforgettable moments at the moment ... maybe it's sad. I usually create from pain, so I guess my creative trips are not very festive.
3. What are your 3 favourite paintings from the exhibition?
Punitive progress, 2020; oil on canvas; 12 3/16 x 10 7/16 in.; (31 x 26.5 cm.)
C-19, 2020, oil on canvas; 14 3/16 x 11 13/16 in.; (36 x 30 cm.)
My favourites are: Punitive Progress, c19 and.........
The first two I like because I see something dramatic, and it is this type of thing that usually attracts my attention. For me, art usually comes from pain, and in these works by Troilo, I think this feeling is most evident.
4. If you could share your works with Angelo Troilo, which one would it be?
Blood and Roses; oil on canvas; 51 3/16 x 38 3/16 in. (130 × 97 cm.)
Como el puente de Avignon (Like the Bridge of Avinyo); oil on canvas; 66 15/16 x 47 ¼ in. (170 x 120 cm.)
My works done in confinement are essentially sexual. They really don't go much beyond what you can see with the naked eye. I built a mental window through which to escape from that overwhelming confinement and the result was that.
But I would choose “Blood and Roses” and “Como el puente de Avignon (Like the Bridge of Avinyo”, which are two dramatic works that I made before confinement. These were a great catharsis at a time that was not good for me. If I have to talk about myself, I think that these works are very honest with me. (to be continued)
